About the event
In 2018, a routine tree removal became anything but routine when our chainsaw hit an unexpected obstacle—a thriving honeybee colony living inside a massive dead oak tree. We stopped everything, called in a beekeeper, and watched in fascination as she relocated our new friends. That rescued hive sparked our bee journey.
Today, under the expert care of Ed Morgan, we maintain 14 thriving hives that produce 400-500 pounds of our signature Linden honey each year. Ed manages apiaries throughout the region and brings years of hands-on experience to every workshop he leads.
This hands-on workshop offers teens and adults a unique opportunity to explore the vital relationship between bees, agriculture, and winemaking—right here at Painted Horse Winery & Vineyards, Milton's founding winery and Georgia's first woman-founded farm winery.
You'll don a professional bee suit (provided) for an up-close journey into our working hives. Learn about colony structure, sustainable beekeeping practices, and the essential role these remarkable pollinators play in our vineyard ecosystem as they [seasonal activity: "prepare for winter" / "build up for spring" / "work the summer nectar flow"].
This isn't just an educational experience—it's a story you'll tell for years. You'll see the queen, watch the workers' intricate dance communication, taste honey straight from the frame (from those very Linden trees that started producing our "liquid gold"), and understand why Ed calls beekeeping "the most humbling and fascinating work there is."

ABOUT YOUR GUIDE
Ed Morgan is our resident beekeeper and passionate advocate for pollinator health. With years of hands-on experience managing hives in agricultural settings throughout the region, Ed has been transformational for our apiary. When he joined our farm family about a year ago, we had just six hives. Under his skilled care and expertise, we've more than doubled our operation to 14 thriving hives that now produce 400-500 pounds of our signature Linden honey each year.
Ed's gift isn't just in managing bees—it's in making complex beekeeping concepts accessible and fascinating. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his patient teaching style puts even the most nervous first-timers at ease. Whether you're curious about starting your own hives or simply want to understand these remarkable creatures better, Ed meets you exactly where you are.
